A rug is not carpet. Carpet is stretched over padding and cleaned in place. A rug is a free-standing textile — often hand-knotted, often wool or silk, often dyed with colors that will run if someone treats it like wall-to-wall. The wrong method on a good rug doesn’t just fail to clean it. It shrinks it, browns the fringe, or bleeds the dye.

In-home cleaning or pickup — which do you need?

This is the first thing to settle, and most companies won’t tell you plainly.

In-home cleaning works for machine-made synthetic rugs, low-pile rugs, and anything that’s more decor than investment. We clean it on site, it dries in hours, and you don’t lose it for a week.

Pickup and off-site cleaning is the right call for hand-knotted wool, silk, antique rugs, and anything with heavy pet contamination. Those rugs need controlled washing, full immersion or careful hand work, proper rinsing, and a controlled dry — none of which can be done properly in a living room.

We’ll tell you honestly which one your rug needs when we see it. If in-home will do the job, we won’t upsell you into pickup.

Rugs we clean

• Oriental and Persian rugs — hand-knotted wool and silk. Dye-tested before cleaning, always.
• Wool rugs — wool is naturally stain-resistant but hates high heat and high alkalinity. We use wool-safe chemistry.
• Silk and viscose — the most damage-prone fibers in the house. Viscose in particular turns yellow and stiff if it is over-wet, and many “silk-look” rugs sold today are viscose. We test first.
• Jute, sisal and seagrass — natural plant fibers that brown and shrink under standard hot-water extraction. These need low-moisture methods.
• Machine-made and synthetic rugs — polypropylene, nylon, polyester. Straightforward and usually cleanable in-home.
• Sheepskin, hide and shag — handled with methods matched to the pile.

Pet urine in a rug

Urine is the reason most rugs get replaced, and it is the job we get called for most.

Here is what is actually happening: urine passes through the rug and settles in the foundation. As it dries it crystallizes, and those salts pull moisture out of Florida’s humid air — which is why the smell comes back on wet days months after the accident. Surface cleaning does nothing to this. Neither does a deodorizing spray.

Getting it out means flushing the foundation, not wiping the face. That is off-site work in most cases. We will tell you upfront if a rug is too far gone rather than take your money for a clean that will not hold.

What we do to a rug

1. Inspect and identify — fiber, construction, dye stability, existing damage. You hear about pre-existing wear before we start, not after.
2. Dust — the step most companies skip. A wool rug can hold pounds of dry soil deep in the pile. If it is not dusted out first, washing turns it into mud.
3. Pre-treat — stains and traffic areas addressed individually.
4. Wash — method matched to fiber. Wool-safe, pH-appropriate, controlled moisture.
5. Rinse and extract — residue left behind is what makes a rug re-soil fast.
6. Controlled dry — flat or hung, with moving air. Slow uncontrolled drying is how rugs mildew in this climate.
7. Finish — fringe cleaned, pile groomed. Fiber protector and antimicrobial treatment available.

Common questions

Do you clean the fringe?
Yes. Fringe is usually cotton even on a wool rug, which means it grays and browns differently from the body. It is cleaned as its own step.

How much does rug cleaning cost?
It depends on size, fiber and condition — a 5×8 synthetic and a 9×12 hand-knotted silk are not the same job. We quote before we start, and the number we give you is the number you pay.

How long does it take?
In-home cleaning dries in 4–6 hours. Off-site cleaning is typically several days depending on the rug and the drying time it needs.

Can you get old pet urine out?
Often, yes — if we can flush the foundation. Long-standing saturation sometimes wins, and we will say so rather than sell you a clean that will not last.

Is it safe for wool and silk?
Yes. That is exactly why we identify the fiber and test the dyes before cleaning rather than applying one method to everything.

Do you clean rugs for apartments and condos?
